Background:
Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network Pakistan is a part of the global movement for Scaling Up
Nutrition (SUN). SUN Business Network (SBN) was established to leverage the private sector’s
competitive advantage in addressing malnutrition. SBN Pakistan is co-convened by Global Alliance for
Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and World Food Programme (WFP) while GAIN is leading as secretariat. SBN
Pakistan has signed up by 33 companies with diverse commitments to contribute to improving nutrition
in Pakistan. Workplace nutrition is one of the priorities of SBN globally and the recent strategic review of
SBN Pakistan’s business engagement strategy has identified workplace nutrition as a priority area for
SBN Pakistan.
Workplace nutrition is an emerging concept adopting by companies in developed countries as a part of
their employee wellness programs in a response to increased malnutrition and resulting negative impact
on employees health and work. Workplace nutrition is one of the areas where business can take
immediate action in contributing to improving nutrition. It requires least investment and businesses
have a clear incentive to adopt and sustain it. Investing in workplace nutrition pays off companies by
increasing the productivity of the workforce and reducing illness associated with malnutrition. Once the
program is demonstrated in the selected companies, SBN will begin advocacy for workplace nutrition in
the private sector.
Workplace nutrition programs take many forms and can be adopted differently in different types of
businesses. Such programs may include breastfeeding support (above and beyond the law), nutrition
education, provision of nutritious food at work (lunches or snacks), health checks (BMI, weight, and
blood pressure) with relevant counseling etc. Since such practices are entirely new in the context of
developing countries such as Pakistan, SBN has prioritized it to demonstrate, and 5 of the SBN member
companies have shown interest to implement. In this regard, SBN is looking for a consultant to design
